Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure performed on patients who are not happy with the size and shape of the nose. This surgery is best to perform after 16 years because the nose keeps on growing upto 16 years. There could be different reasons for this surgery. Sometimes it is needed to reconstruct the nose after an accident or sometimes birth defects. Some patients need this surgery because they have breathing issues. For breathing it is called Septoplasty.
The surgery is done under general or local anesthesia depending on the patient or doctor’s choice. Some procedures are done without the incision depending on the case. To get to the bone or cartilage of the nose a small incision is made vertically in the creases of the nose to get minimum scaring. The surgeon then reshapes the bone and cartilage and stitches it back to the normal position. After the surgery a splint is applied to the nose to hold the new shape in place and gets removed after 1 to 2 weeks*. The swelling subsides after 3 to 4 weeks*. A patient can see best results after six months.
